How to Replace the Door Jamb Switch on a 98 Ford Ranger

If the dome lights in your 1998 Ford Ranger won't go off or you constantly hear that chime reminding you to close your door, the problem may be with your door jamb switch. This switch is located on the door of your vehicle and is not difficult to replace. In fact, provided the right tools, this task should only take you half an hour.

Things You'll Need

  • Torx screwdriver
  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Remove the screw from the door's window crank using a Torx screwdriver, and remove the crank.

  • Remove the two screws from the door handle using a Phillips head screwdriver and remove it from the interior door panel.

  • Remove the two screws securing the door panel at the bottom of the door. Remove the door panel.

  • Remove the water shield around the edge of the door until the door jamb switch is revealed. Grip the water shield with your hands and peel it off of the door. It will come right off.

  • Rotate the pin at the bottom of the door jamb switch using a Phillips head screwdriver. Remove the pin to release the switch. Pull the switch out of the door and install a replacement. Place the replacement switch onto the door, making sure the pin hole is at the bottom of the switch. Press the switch into the door to make sure it does not budge. Push the pin into the hole at the bottom of the door jamb to secure it.

  • Reattach the water shield by using your hands to press it into the indentation along the edge of the door.

  • Reattach the door panel and its screws. Reattach the door handle and window crank and their respective screws.
