How to Install a Celica Convertible Top

The convertible top on your Toyota Celica is a great way to enjoy the cool breeze on a warm summer's day drive. However, over time the fabric on your top can become worn and damaged, affecting the structural stability of the convertible top. When this occurs you need to replace the top on your Celica as soon as possible to prevent any further damage. You can pick up a replacement top from any local auto-parts store. The work will take about three or four hours to complete.

Things You'll Need

  • Contact cement
  • Phillips-head screwdriver
  • Protective gloves
  • Staple gun
  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • Enter the back seat of your Toyota Celica and locate the metal retaining strip which connects the rear of the convertible top to the back of the interior.

  • Use a Phillips-head screwdriver to remove the screws that hold the metal strip in place. This will free the back of the top from the Celica.

  • Remove the staples which connect the front area of the top to the frame using a flat-head screwdriver. Discard the staples.

  • Put on your protective gloves. Turn the tension cables attached to the top bow in a counterclockwise direction to loosen them from the bow. Pull the cables away from the top bow.

  • Lift the old convertible top away from the Toyota and replace with the new top. Take care not to damage the tow bow frame as you do this.

  • Place contact cement on the two side flats which are on the sides of the top bow. Press the flaps together in order to attach the top to the frame. Wait 20 minutes to allow the cement to set.

  • Use a staple gun to attach the staples on the front of the convertible top in the same places from which you removed the old ones. Reattach the metal retaining strip between the rear top and interior using a Phillips-head screwdriver.

  • Place the tension cables back in to the top bow and turn them clockwise to secure them in place.
