How to Install a Fel-Pro Exhaust Manifold Gasket

Federal Mogul is an American company that manufactures and distributes automotive replacement parts and accessories under many different brand names. Fel-Pro is the brand name used by Federal Mogul for its premium sealing systems. A Fel-Pro exhaust manifold gasket is used to seal a vehicle's exhaust manifold to the engine. Without a good seal at this junction, exhaust gases could enter the passenger compartment.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket set
  • Ratchet wrench
  • Penetrating fluid (optional)
  • Pry bar
  • Open the hood and allow the exhaust system to cool for one hour if the engine has recently been run. Locate the exhaust manifold on the side of the engine block. Keep in mind that V-6 and V-8 engines have one exhaust manifold on each side of the engine.

  • Loosen and remove the retaining bolts from the exhaust pipe that is attached to the underside of the exhaust manifold with a socket and ratchet wrench.

  • Loosen and remove the retaining bolts that attach the exhaust manifold to the cylinder head of the engine with a socket and ratchet wrench. Spray the bolts with penetrating fluid if they seem stubborn and allow it to soak in for several minutes before attempting to loosen the bolts again.

  • Move the exhaust manifold away from the cylinder head just far enough that the Fel-Pro gasket can be inserted in between the manifold and the head. Pry the manifold carefully with a pry bar, if necessary. Use care not to mar the mating surface of the manifold.

  • Insert the exhaust manifold gasket with the steel side facing the exhaust manifold and the fiber side of the gasket facing the cylinder head. Ensure the mounting holes in the gasket line up with the holes in the manifold and the cylinder head.

  • Push the exhaust manifold against the cylinder head. Start the manifold retaining bolts by hand to prevent cross-threading. Tighten the bolts with a socket and ratchet wrench.

  • Lift the exhaust pipe back into position on the underside of the manifold and thread the retaining bolts in by hand. Tighten the bolts with a socket and ratchet wrench.
