How to Change the Upper Control Arm on a TrailBlazer

The upper control arm on your Chevrolet TrailBlazer is an important component of the vehicle's suspension. Accessing and replacing the upper control arm will require raising the vehicle with a car jack. The control arm is held in place by various bolts and nuts. You will need to remove several components from the control arm before the control arm itself can be removed and replaced. You can complete the task in under three hours.

Things You'll Need

  • Floor jack
  • Jack stands
  • Lug wrench
  • Socket wrench
  • Pliers
  • Spring compressing tool
  • Raise the front end of the vehicle with a jack and lower it onto two jack stands placed on either side of the frame. Support the lower control arm with the floor jack.

  • Remove the lug nuts from both of the front wheels using a lug wrench and pull the wheels off the vehicle.

  • Remove the cotter pin from the upper control arm using pliers and then remove the stud nut using a socket wrench.

  • Use the spring compressing tool to compress the coil spring.

  • Raise the upper arm and remove the nuts from the control arm shaft studs with a socket wrench. Pull the upper control arm off of the TrailBlazer.

  • Install a replacement control arm and reattach the nuts to the control arm shaft studs.

  • Remove the spring compressing tool and reattach the cotter pin and stud nut.

  • Reattach the wheel and the lug nuts. Raise the vehicle, remove the jack stands and then lower the TrailBlazer to the ground.
