How to Install Control Switches for Toyota Avalon Power Windows

All Toyota Avalon models come standard with power windows. These windows are controlled by an electric window switch, which is located on each door panel. The process of replacing a window control switch is the same on all Toyota Avalon models, as well as on most other modern cars. You can expect the control panel for the power windows to fail at some point in the car's lifespan. The master control switch also integrates the power door lock and mirror switch, so these may fail as well, prompting you to replace the entire control panel.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrench or pliers
  • Flathead screwdriver or trim panel stick
  • Turn off the Avalon's engine. Turn the negative battery cable nut counterclockwise with pliers or a wrench. Wiggle and pull the cable upward to remove it from the battery post to prevent an accidental short circuit while you are handling the wiring.

  • Insert the tip of a flathead screwdriver or a trim panel stick beneath the lower corner of the old window control switch. If the control switch is already removed, you can skip this step. Gently pry the switch upward to unhook it from the door panel. On the back, you'll find three electrical harnesses for the master window switch. The other window switches have one connection. Depress the plastic tab on each harness connection with the flathead screwdriver, then unplug them to disconnect the old switch.

  • Plug the harnesses into the new window switch. Place the switch on top of the door panel window switch mount. Push the edges down firmly to secure the switch to the door. The plastic clips will automatically connect.

  • Reconnect the negative cable to the battery and test the new window switch.
