How to Remove an Engine from a 95 Chevy S10 2.2

You might need to remove the 2.2-liter engine from the 1995 Chevrolet S-10 to rebuild it or you may want to remove it to upgrade to a V-8. When removing the engine, if you are going to reinstall it, you should keep the bolts separated so you don't have to look for them when you do the re-installation. The Chevrolet 2.2-liter engine is a workhorse and if well-taken care of, could amass tons of miles before it needs to be rebuilt or replaced. If you use the truck as a work truck and the body is still in good condition, remove the 2.2-liter engine in favor of a V-8 which is an easy conversion.

Things You'll Need

  • Set of wrenches
  • Screwdriver
  • Set of sockets
  • 2 drain pans
  • Floor jack
  • Jack stands
  • Tape and marker
  • Oil filter wrench
  • Set of line wrenches
  • Distributor wrench
  • Engine hoist
  • Locate the relay box near the driver's side fender well. Lift the cover off and using the diagram on the underside of the cover, locate and remove the fuel pump relay. You should be able to pull it out of its socket with your fingers. Start the vehicle and let it run until it stalls. If it won't start, crank it over four or five times to relieve the fuel pressure in the fuel system. Disconnect the negative battery cable using the appropriate wrench.

  • Slide one of the drain pans under the radiator petcock. Loosen the petcock and allow the coolant to drain. Discard the coolant in an appropriate manner. Disconnect the vacuum reservoir and the underhood light from the hood. Remove the outer cowl vent grilles using the screwdriver.

  • Match-mark the hood, so you know where to line it up when you reinstall it. Remove the hood, using the appropriate sockets. Raise the front of the truck with the floor jack and support it with jack stands. Slide the other drain pan under the oil pan. Remove the oil pan drain bolt and allow the oil to drain. Reinstall the bolt. Discard the oil in an appropriate manner.

  • Unplug the oxygen sensor. Disconnect the exhaust manifolds and loosen the hanger at the catalytic converter using the appropriate sockets. Remove the skid plate using the appropriate sockets. Remove the engine-to-transmission braces using the appropriate socket. Disconnect the line clamp at the bellhousing using the appropriate socket.

  • Label all wires and vacuum lines using the tape and marker. Remove the starter wiring using the appropriate wrench. Put the nuts back on the studs so you don't lose them. Remove the starter using the appropriate sockets.

  • Remove the oil filter using the oil filter wrench. Remove the engine mount through-bolts. Remove the rear engine mount's crossbar nut and washer using the appropriate wrench. Remove all the bellhousing bolts except the upper left bolt using the appropriate socket.

  • Disconnect the negative battery cable from the engine using the appropriate socket. Loosen the clamps on the air duct using the screwdriver. Remove the air duct and the air clean assembly. Remove the upper radiator shroud and the fan assembly using the appropriate sockets.

  • Slide a socket onto the bolt in the center of the tensioner pulley. Rotate the pulley toward the center of the engine to loosen tension on the belt. Lift the belt off the pulleys. Remove the water pump pulley using the appropriate socket. Loosen the clamps on the upper and lower radiator hoses at the radiator and the engine.

  • Remove the hoses. Unplug the wiring harness connector on the air compressor. Do not remove the lines. Unbolt the compressor from its bracket and set it aside. Disconnect the oil cooler lines using the appropriate line wrench. Disconnect the overflow hose using the screwdriver.

  • Plug the cooler openings with a bolt or shop rags to prevent leakage. Unbolt and remove the radiator and the lower radiator shroud using the appropriate sockets. Disconnect the power steering hoses from the steering gear using the appropriate line wrench, then cap the opening to prevent fluid loss. Remove the heater hoses from the intake manifold and water pump using a screwdriver.

  • Disconnect the wiring harness and vacuum lines from the engine. Disconnect the throttle cables using the screwdriver and appropriate socket. Label the plug wires, using the tape and marker.

  • Disconnect the power steering hoses from the steering gear, then cap the openings to prevent system contamination or excessive fluid loss. Remove the distributor cap using a screwdriver, but leave the plug wires attached to the distributor. Remove the rotor. Remove the distributor hold-down bolt using the distributor wrench. Pull the distributor out of the engine.

  • Slide the floor jack under the transmission and jack it up enough to support the transmission. Remove the last bellhousing bolt using the appropriate socket. Disconnect the fuel lines using the appropriate line wrench. Remove the fuel line bracket, using the appropriate socket. Remove the ground straps from the back of the heads using the appropriate wrench. Attach the engine hoist to the engine. Carefully lift the engine out of the vehicle.
