How to Remove the Passenger Side Airbag Cover on a Mazda Tribute

If your dash has been dented or if part of your dash seems to be coming loose, you might be in the position of having to remove the passenger side airbag cover. This is a risky endeavor as the airbag could be deployed accidentally at any time if it is tampered with. Fortunately, Mazda Tributes have a built in method to disable the SRS system. With the SRS airbag system disabled, you can safely remove the airbag cover in your dash.

Things You'll Need

  • Screwdriver

Disable the Airbag System

  • Turn your Tribute's ignition to the off position.

  • Locate the fuse box on your center console. It should be near the right side.

  • Remove fuse number 32 from the fuse box.

  • Turn your vehicle's ignition to on. You should notice an airbag warning light.

  • Turn your vehicle's ignition back to the off position.

  • Remove the negative terminal of your Tribute's battery.

Remove the Airbag Cover

  • Open the glove compartment and empty it out.

  • Using your hands, feel along the top of the glove compartment area for clip tabs that are securing the airbag cover. They should be on the top front and top right sides.

  • Use your finger to release each of these tabs.

  • Remove the airbag cover by pulling it away from the dash once all clips have been unlocked.

Re-enable the Airbag System

  • Turn your Tribute's ignition to the on position.

  • Reinstall fuse number 32 into the fuse box.

  • Ensure that nothing is blocking your passenger side airbag in the case of accidental employment.

  • Re-connect the negative terminal of your battery.

  • Turn your ignition to the off position. Wait for a minute.

  • Turn your ignition to the on position again.
