How to Wire a 1978 Ford Truck Starter Solenoid

Nowadays truck starters and solenoids are generally made as one unit. However, the starter on your 1978 Ford pickup used a starter solenoid that was separate from the starter itself. The solenoid, which was mounted on the passenger side fender well in your 1978 Ford Pickup, connected to the starter, and is responsible for completing the circuit during the starting process. Replacing your starter solenoid is an easy job that you can do at home in around fifteen minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket set
  • New starter solenoid
  • Open the hood on your Ford pickup and use your socket set to remove the negative battery cable.

  • Find the old solenoid mounted on the passenger side wheel well. Use the socket set to remove each of the three wires from the old solenoid and connect them to the corresponding terminals on the new solenoid.

  • Remove the old solenoids mounting bolts with your socket set and then lift it up and dispose of it. Place the new solenoid into position where the old one was mounted. Insert the mounting bolts and thread them by hand. Tighten them down with your socket set.

  • Replace your Ford pickup's negative battery cable with the socket set.
