How to Replace a Chevy Truck Tailgate Hinge

The tailgate on Chevrolet trucks is secured to the rear of the vehicle through two tailgate latches and, on newer Chevrolet trucks, two tailgate cables. If one of the hinges breaks, you will need to replace it to safely lower and raise the truck's tailgate. The hinge is held on to the truck by two screws. Once you have removed the screws, you can easily replace the hinge within a matter of minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Park the truck and apply the parking brake.

  • Open the tailgate. Have someone support the tailgate before you begin replacing the hinges.

  • Use a Phillips screwdriver to uninstall the two screws securing broken hinge. Pull off the hinge.

  • Install a replacement hinge and reattach the two screws. Close the tailgate.
