How to Repair a GMC Jimmy Tailgate Latch

The Jimmy is a truck that was manufactured by General Motors from 1983 to 2000. The Jimmy, like most trucks, has a tailgate that you open and close with a latch. If the latch begins to malfunction, you should repair it as soon as you can. As the time and cost of repairing the latch is greater than replacing it, replacing the latch is your best option. The latch is held in place by several screws, so once you remove the screws, you can easily replace the latch.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Remove the four screws from the covering panel on the center of the tailgate, using a Phillips screwdriver.

  • Pull the covering panel off of the tailgate to access the tailgate latch.

  • Remove the four securing screws from the tailgate latch, using a Phillips screwdriver.

  • Pull the tailgate latch out of the Jimmy and install a replacement latch.

  • Attach the four securing screws to the new latch. Reattach the covering panel and secure it with the screws.
