A broken speedometer can be a major nuisance, especially when trying to drive at or under the speed limit. Fixing the speedometer requires replacing the entire speedometer and tachometer cluster, as the individual gauge and components cannot be serviced individually. Most do-it-yourself mechanics can have the cluster removed and swapped with a working cluster within a hour, needing only basic tools for the task.
Remove the negative battery cable from the battery terminal. Unscrew the retaining nut or bolt with a socket wrench, pull it from the terminal and set it aside.
Remove the retaining screws on the instrument cluster trim with a Phillips screwdriver. Pull the trim away from the instrument cluster by hand to dislodge any retaining clips, and remove the trim from the passenger compartment.
Unscrew the retaining screws holding the switch panel and tachometer and speedometer cluster in place with a Phillips screwdriver. Pull the switch panel and cluster out and unplug the electrical connections from the back of the cluster and switch panel.
Disconnect the speedometer cable with pliers. If the speedometer cable has already become disconnected, connect the cable with pliers and skip to Step 7 to install the cluster with the cable now connected.
Unscrew the screws retaining the switch panel to the cluster with a Phillips screwdriver. Pull the panel from the cluster.
Attach the switch panel to the replacement cluster, installing the retaining screws with a Phillips screwdriver.
Place the panel and cluster near the instrument panel and plug in the electrical connections to the rear of the cluster and panel. Connect the speedometer cable with pliers. Push the cluster and switch panel into the recess on the instrument panel and install the retaining screws with a Phillips screwdriver.
Push the instrument cluster trim back into place. Install the retaining screws with a Phillips screwdriver.
Attach the negative battery cable to the battery terminal. Tighten the retaining bolt or nut with a socket wrench.
