Where Is the Blower Resistor on a Dodge Dakota?

The blower system on a Dodge Dakota has several main components. One component is the blower motor assembly. This assembly has an electric motor and fan that blow air through the ductwork of your Dakota and out of the vents. The other main component is the blower motor resistor. This component limits the fan speed to the setting selected by the user. This component does fail on occasion and must be replaced, but it is relatively easy to locate and replace.

Location

  • The regulator is located on the passenger side of the Dakota. It is beneath the dashboard and inserted into the blower motor's plastic housing. It has two Phillips head screws holding it into the housing and a wiring harness plugging into it.

Removal

  • Removing the resistor only take a few steps. Lift up on the locking tan holding the wiring harness on the resistor. Loosen the two screws holding the resistor and pull it out. Use caution when removing the resistor, as it may be brittle and you do not want it to fall apart and land in the blower motor.

Installation

  • The installation of the Dakota's blower motor resistor is as easy as its removal. Insert the resistor's circuit side into the blower motor housing and tighten the screws. Plug the wiring harness into the rear of the resistor and listen for the locking tab to click into place.

Function

  • The blower motor resistor controls the speed in which the fan spins, increasing or decreasing the speed in which the air blows from the vents. It performs this task by adding resistance to the flow of electricity going into the blower motor. The lower the volts, the slower the fan speed.
