The transfer case transfers power from the transmission to all four wheels, allowing a four-wheel drive vehicle to operate. It accomplishes this task via output axles going to differential units at both the front and rear of the vehicle. New Process is a leader in transfer case manufacturing, with New Process transfer case models used in numerous vehicles from different automaker's, including Ford and General Motors. The New Process model 205 transfer case is easily identified by locating the New Proces ID tag and by counting bolts on the transfer case.
View the back of the transfer case. The back of the transfer case faces the rear of the vehicle. If the NP-205 is still mounted to the transmission, access the transfer case from the rear of the vehicle. The transfer case is mounted to the output shaft of the transmission.
Locate the identification tag found on the back of the NP-205 case. New Process attaches an identification tag to the transfer case, which identifies it by the model designation, in this case, "NP-205".
Count the number of bolts mounting the transfer case to the transmission output shaft to differentiate between GM and Ford NP-205 units. According to High Impact Transmission and Gear, GM units from 1971 to 1975 have eight bolts in the pattern of a racetrack, whereas Ford NP205 units and 1986 and later GM units have a circular six-bolt pattern.
