At first, the clutch line, which carries hydraulic fluid to the clutch, may seem difficult to disconnect from the clutch assembly. The fitting is a quick-disconnect type of fitting, which requires a special tool made specifically for these types of fittings, or a certain procedure using a standard head screwdriver. While both methods can be used to remove the line on a 1996 Ford Ranger, using the special tool is much easier.
Place the quick-disconnect tool over the plastic white tabs on the clutch line. Squeeze the handle of the tool to depress the tabs on the clutch line.
Rotate the clutch line with the tabs depressed to dislodge the connector on the end of the clutch line with the retainer on the clutch.
Pull the clutch line away from the clutch while depressing the tabs with the tool. The line will separate from the clutch when being pulled.
Push the screwdriver against the spring-loaded side of the clutch line, nearest to the clutch.
Push the coupling toward the transmission with the screwdriver while rotating the clutch line to dislodge the connector on the end of the clutch line with the retainer on the clutch. Be careful, as the screwdriver may slip when rotating the line.
Pull the clutch line away from the clutch while pushing the spring-loaded coupling nearest the clutch. The line will separate from the clutch when being pulled.
