How to Replace the Front Bearing on a 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix

The wheel bearings on your 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix's front wheels help to stabilize your ride and help your car's handling while making turns. Bad wheel bearings can cause your Grand Prix to vibrate and rattle. The wheel bearings on your Grand Prix come packaged in a single assembly. They can be replaced easily at home with only a few tools. Installation time takes roughly half an hour.

Things You'll Need

  • Lug wrench
  • Floor jack
  • Jack stand
  • Coat hanger
  • Replacement wheel bearings
  • Pull the emergency brake lever to engage it. Loosen the lug nuts on the wheel of the Grand Prix you are going to change the wheel bearings on. Set the jack under your front frame and elevate your car. Place the jack stands under the frame and set the car on them. Remove the lug nuts and pull off your tire.

  • Remove the brake caliper retaining bolts with your socket set. Your Grand Prix caliper bolts can be removed with a 13 mm socket. Pull the brake caliper off the rotor and hang it from the frame with a coat hanger or piece of wire. Also remove the rotor from the wheel you are working on by pulling it directly towards you.

  • Remove your Grand Prix's bearing nut with a 35 mm hub socket. It is located on the inside spindle on the wheel assembly. Pull the old bearing assembly out and put the new one in. Replace the assembly and tighten the bearing nut.

  • Slip your Grand Prix brake rotor back on and then seat the brake caliper over it. Hold the caliper in place as you hand-start the caliper retaining bolts. Tighten those bolts with your socket set.

  • Put your tire back on and install your lug nuts. Lower your Grand Prix down from the jack stands and jack and fully tighten your lug nuts with your tire tool.
