How do I Fix the Radio in a 1988 Chevy Pick Up Truck?

There are three main reasons for the radio on your 1988 Chevrolet pickup truck to stop working: a blown radio fuse, a loose electrical connector or a loose antenna. All three issues have simple solutions that take very little time. These issues are all problems that afflict the truck. If the issue is with the radio itself, you will have to consult the manufacturer of the radio to fix the problem.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket wrench
  • Slotted screwdriver
  • Phillips screwdriver

Radio Fuse

  • Open the driver's side door.

  • Pry off the cover of the fuse box on the side panel in the far left of the vehicle, using a slotted screwdriver. Locate the fuse numbered "19," which is the radio fuse.

  • Pull the fuse out and replace it with a 15A fuse.

  • Place the cover back onto the fuse box and close the door.

Electrical Connector

  • Turn the truck off. Open the hood and disconnect the black negative terminal from the battery with a socket wrench.

  • Pry out the control knobs and the bezels from the radio control shafts with a slotted screwdriver. Remove the two nuts and bolts from the supporting shaft with a wrench.

  • Remove the two screws from the support bracket with the screwdriver. Lift the radio and pull it out of the dashboard as far as you can.

  • Reach behind the radio and locate the electrical connector. Tug on the connector to test if it is securely connected. If it comes out or is loose, securely plug it into the rear of the radio.

  • Place the radio back into the dashboard and reinstall its components. Reconnect the battery.

Antenna

  • Turn off the truck's engine and walk to the front right-hand side of the vehicle.

  • Wiggle the antenna to test if it is secured. If the antenna is loose, you will need to tighten it.

  • Rotate the antenna clockwise to secure it to the truck.
