How to Change the Steering Wheel on Your Grand Marquis

The modern Grand Marquis began production in 2003, and features a 4.6 liter, 8 cylinder engine and a 4 speed automatic transmission. The steering wheel features a horn, safety airbag, and optional control buttons for the stereo and accessory devices. If the steering wheel on your Grand Marquis is worn down or doesn't fit your style, you can replace it in about thirty minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • Crescent wrench
  • Screwdriver
  • Socket wrench set
  • Steering wheel puller, part number T67L-3600-A
  • Open the hood of your Grand Marquis. Loosen the negative battery terminal nut with your crescent wrench. Lift off the negative battery cable from the battery. Set the cable aside.

  • Remove the lower dashboard trim in the Grand Marquis cabin with your screwdriver. Pull out the 10 watt airbag fuse with your fingers. Wait thirty minutes to an hour for the capacitor in the airbag which holds the charge to decharge.

  • Loosen and remove the four screws on the sides of the steering wheel column near the steering wheel with your screwdriver. The airbag should pop out. Pull the airbag gently off of the steering wheel. Disconnect the two wiring connectors of the airbag. Set the airbag aside.

  • Disconnect the other wiring connectors in the steering wheel, including the horn connector and accessory instruments connector.

  • Remove the central bolt in the steering wheel hub with your socket wrench and ratchet. Thread the two bolts of the steering wheel puller into the rivets of the steering wheel. Thread the central shaft of the steering wheel puller into the steering wheel until the wheel pops off of the shaft. Pull the steering wheel the rest of the way off of the shaft.

  • Set your new steering onto the steering wheel shaft. Rethread the central bolt you removed earlier. Reconnect the wiring harnesses you earlier disconnected. Remount the airbag. Replace the airbag fuse. Reconnect the negative battery cable to the battery.
