How to Replace the Driver Door Window on a 1998 Chevy Silverado

Replacing your 1998 Chevrolet Silverado's driver side door window is a long and difficult task. Not only do you have to remove the interior door panel to gain access to the window, but you must proceed with caution so as to not break the glass in the process. If the old window was broken, then you need to be careful as there will be glass shards inside the door. In addition, you will need a special regulator tool to remove the window regulator handle. This tool can be purchased from your local Chevrolet dealership or online. You can expect the procedure to take you up to two hours.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrench
  • Slotted screwdriver
  • Regulator tool
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Lower the window as far as it will go. Turn the Silverado's engine off and open the hood. Use a wrench to remove the negative ground cable off the battery. Open the driver's side door.

  • Insert a slotted screwdriver in between the door handle and the door. Pry outwards to remove the door handle. Snap off the plastic retaining tabs and disconnect the electrical connection. Remove the door handle.

  • Use the J 9886-01 regulator tool to remove the window regulator handle. Place the tool between the handle and the bearing plate and push down on the tool to remove the handle's retaining clip. Remove the handle.

  • Pry off the speaker cover from the door with a slotted screwdriver. Pry the door accessory mounting from the door panel. It will come off easily.

  • Remove the screw holding the armrest in place with a Phillips screwdriver. Remove the armrest.

  • Remove the door panel from the door using a slotted screwdriver to slowly pry it out. Disconnect all three electrical connections.

  • Remove the vent window assembly by removing the bolt and two screws securing it to the door. Slide the window along the front roller until it lines up with the retaining notch on the door. Remove the roller. Pull the window out of the door.

  • Install the new window into the notch on the door and reinstall the front roller. Reattach the vent window assembly and reinstall its bolt and two screws.

  • Reattach the electrical connections to the door panel and reinstall the door panel. Place the armrest back onto the door panel and secure it with the retaining screw.

  • Snap the speaker cover back into place on the door panel. Reinstall the window regulator and the door handle and reconnect the Silverado's battery.
