Pontiac Grand AM GT 2-DR 6x9 Installation

On Pontiac Grand Ams, the rear stock speakers can wear over time, eventually causing the speaker cone to separate from the speaker. Once this happens, listening to the speaker may be stressful with its awful sound. However, most vehicle owners can replace the rear 6-by-9 speaker on a two-door Pontiac Grand Am in just a few minutes with only basic hand tools. Installing aftermarket speakers requires an additional wiring harness that is available at most electronic stores.

Things You'll Need

  • Scosche SHCR01B or Metra 72-4570 Speaker Connectors
  • Standard head screwdriver
  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Place a standard head screwdriver under the speaker grille. Pry the speaker grille away from the rear package shelf and remove it from the interior.

  • Unscrew the four retaining screws with a Phillips-head screwdriver that hold the speaker to the rear package shelf.

  • Open the trunk. Detach the wiring to the speaker. Pull the speaker toward the front of the vehicle to dislodge the retaining clips, the lift them up and out from the rear package shelf.

  • Set the new speaker in place. Move it toward the rear of the vehicle to engage the retaining clips.

  • Install the four retaining screws with a Phillips head screwdriver.

  • Attach the wiring to the new speaker. If the speaker is a stock speaker made by Pontiac, the wiring connection already in place will directly fit onto the speaker. If the speaker is an aftermarket speaker, connect the vehicle-specific aftermarket wiring harness to the speaker, then attach the end of the harness to the vehicle wiring.

  • Push the speaker grille over the top of the speaker on the rear package shelf, engaging the retaining clips in the mounting holes.
