How to Replace the Ignition Switch in a 1992 Toyota Camry

If you struggle to start your 1992 Toyota Camry and have already checked the alternator and starter, you most likely will have to replace the ignition switch. This is a difficult job for inexperienced home mechanics, but it can be completed in a matter of minutes if carried out correctly. You can pick up the tools you will need and a replacement ignition switch from your local auto supply store.

Things You'll Need

  • Screwdriver set
  • Wrench set
  • Replacement ignition switch
  • Open up the hood of your Camry and locate the battery. Use a wrench to remove the holding bolts which fix the positive and negative cables to the battery terminal. Lift the cables off their terminals. This will allow you to safely work on the vehicle's electrical components.

  • Lift the steering wheel cover off the steering wheel. You should be able to simply unclip it from its plastic holdings. Disconnect the electrical connectors, which are attached to the horn and the air bags.

  • Remove the turn signal and windshield wiper controls by disconnecting the wiring in a similar way to how you removed the horn and airbag connectors.

  • Locate the ignition switch, then use a Phillips head screwdriver to remove the mounting bolts which hold it in place. Place your key in the ignition and turn it to the locked position. Use a small flat-head screwdriver to unclip the retaining pin, which is attached to the lock cylinder. This will let you remove both the ignition switch and lock cylinder.

  • Attach the new ignition switch to the lock cylinder so the two tabs firmly lock in place. Reattach the ignition switch and lock cylinder to the vehicle and fix them in place with the mounting bolts. Reattach the steering wheel assembly, following the removal steps in reverse.

  • Reattach the battery cables to their respective terminals. Turn on the engine to check that the ignition switch now works correctly.
