How to Fix a Clutch Pedal That Dropped to the Floor in an MX-6

A clutch pedal that drops straight to the floor can leave your Mazda MX-6 stranded. There are a few things you can do to fix the problem so you can get the car home or to a repair facility. If the clutch pedal has dropped to the floor, then you may not even be able to start the car, and you certainly won't be able to move it because it won't go into gear.

Things You'll Need

  • Brake fluid
  • Duct tape
  • Pump the brake pedal to see whether that clears the air out of the system. You will need to reach down and move it with your hand. If the pedal begins to catch again, you may get enough into the system to shift a few times and get home or to a repair facility.

  • Open the hood and check the fluid level in the clutch fluid reservoir. If the level is low, then top off the fluid. Check the fluid for discoloration or cloudiness as this suggests that a foreign substance has gotten into the system.

  • Check the slave cylinder and master cylinder for leaks. Look around the seals for clutch fluid, cracks or dents. With fluid in the system, you may be able to encourage the system to leak by topping off the reservoir and pumping the clutch pedal. If you find a leak in either the slave or master cylinder, then both cylinders need to be replaced. An old one paired with a new one will almost always cause the old one to fail.

  • Trace the hydraulic lines from the master and slave cylinders and look for any fluid on the lines. Check closely around joints and old brittle lines. If you find a leak, you can use duct tape to keep the line sealed until you reach home or a repair facility.
