How to Install a Step Bar in a F150

Installing step bars on your Ford F150 provides improved accessibility to the truck's passenger compartment as well as a stylish look to the exterior. While Ford does offer the step bars and running boards as a factory option, many people choose to install them after the fact. For those considering this option, you can choose from a wide variety of step bars made by Ford as well as several aftermarket companies. Installing the step bars is a job best suited for someone with basic auto-repair skill and an hour of free time.

Things You'll Need

  • Floor jack
  • 4 jack stands
  • Socket set
  • Lift the driver's side of the F150 off the ground with the floor jack. Place two jack stands at the front and rear of the driver's side frame and lower the F150 onto the stands with the floor jack.

  • Place the other two jack stands under the F150's body rail. Set the left step bar on the jack stands, with the mounting brackets towards the frame.

  • Align the step bar mounts with the pre-drilled holes in the F150's frame. Bolt the step bars to the frame using the socket set. If your step bars come unassembled, bolt the mounting brackets to the frame with supplied hardware and your socket set, using the factory pre-drilled mounting holes in the frame first, and then bolt the bars to the brackets using the socket set.

  • Lower the F150 off the jack stands with the floor jack.

  • Move to the passenger side and repeat steps one through three to install the right step bar.
