How do I Install a PCM on a 1995 Dodge Ram Truck?

The programmable control module, or PCM, on the 1995 Dodge Ram truck controls the fuel-injection components, ignition timing and the sensors. The sensors feed information to the computer so that it can change the timing, fuel mixture and injector timing as needed for optimum running conditions and fuel economy. Depending on which circuit malfunctions on the computer, the Ram may still run or it may not start at all. The PCM may be located on either the inner fender or the firewall, depending on which engine is in your truck.

Things You'll Need

  • Set of sockets
  • Torque wrench (inch-pounds)
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable and lay it aside, ensuring that it does not touch metal. Remove the connector retaining bolt with the appropriate socket. Carefully pull the 60-way connector off the computer.

  • Remove the mounting bolts, using the appropriate socket. Remove the computer from the engine compartment.

  • Mount the new computer to the fender or firewall and install the mounting bolts. Tighten them to 9 inch-lbs. of torque. Plug in the 60-pin connector, ensuring that it is perfectly lined up before you press it on. If you bend just one of the pins, the computer will not work properly.

  • Install the connector retaining bolt and tighten it to 35 inch-lbs. of torque. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
