How to Adjust the Cable for the Clutch

The clutch lever on your motorcycle should have a minimum of ¼-inch free play and a maximum of ½-inch free play. Free play is the amount of movement a clutch lever has before it engages the clutch. You measure the amount of movement as it relates to the handle bar. Therefore, you should be able to pull the cultch lever towards the handle bar approximately ¼-inch before you feel your clutch engage. This prevents the clutch from burning while you ride the motorcycle. You adjust free play with the clutch cable.

Things You'll Need

  • Ruler
  • Wrench set
  • Place the ruler over the handlebar and the clutch lever and measure the amount of free play you have in your clutch lever.

  • Pull the clutch cable adjustor cover off the adjustor. The adjustor is usually located near the down tube on the front of the motorcycle frame. It consists of a threaded connector and a jam nut.

  • Loosen the jam nut on the clutch cable adjustor with the wrench.

  • Turn the adjustor counterclockwise to reduce the amount of free play in the clutch lever or turn it clockwise to increase the amount of free play. Complete this step based off your measurement in step one.

  • Check the free play in the clutch lever and make any final adjustments necessary to obtain free play between ½-inc and ¼-inch.

  • Tighten the jam nut using the wrench and then slide the cover back over the adjustor.
