How to Disconnect the Power Steering Line From the Power Steering Pump

The power steering line is a high-pressure line that carries power steering fluid from the power steering pump into the steering column. If the line is damaged, it will need to be replaced. The line consists of a long rubber hose between two pieces of metal tubing. The open ends of the metal tubing are flared, and each has a flange nut that will tighten and hold the flared ends to the appropriate component when tightened. These flange nuts will need to be loosened to remove the line. Depending on the make and model of your vehicle and the location of the pump, routing of the line and the location of the flange nuts in the pump and steering column will differ.

Things You'll Need

  • Open-end or combination wrench set
  • Drip pan
  • Flange nut wrench (optional)
  • Blowtorch (optional)
  • Vise grips (optional)
  • Hammer (optional)
  • Spray-on bolt lubricant (optional)
  • Shut off the engine. Set the parking brake on your vehicle. You may have to do part of the work under the vehicle, and it is very important to ensure that the vehicle does not move.

  • Locate your power steering pump. Find the two lines running to it. One line will have a clamp that secures it to the pump; this is the return hose. The other line will be smaller, and mounted into the pump with a large nut around the line holding it in place. This is the power steering line, which you will have to remove.

  • Trace this line from its start in the power steering pump until you find the other end. This end will have a smaller nut on it, and ends in the steering column. This is the second piece you will have to remove.

  • Use the correct sized wrench to remove the flange nut on the power steering pump. This nut can be very tight, and can be difficult to remove. Loosen the nut by turning it counterclockwise.

  • Place the drip pan under the power steering pump and place the loose end of the line into it. Allow all the power steering fluid to drain.

  • Use a wrench to remove the flange nut from the steering column by turning the nut counterclockwise. Remove the end of the metal tubing that it was securing from the steering column once the nut is loose.

  • Unclip the power steering line from the clips that secure it. These clips are in several places along the length of the line. Pull the line loose from them, and the entire line will be free from the vehicle.
