How to Troubleshoot a Chevy Ignition Module

If the ignition module in your Chevy stops working, your engine will not turn over when you turn the ignition key. However, the symptom could also be due to a bad battery. There are troubleshooting steps you can take to eliminate the battery as the possible suspect and to determine if your ignition module is defective.

Things You'll Need

  • Multimeter
  • Connect the red cable on a multimeter to the positive ("+") terminal on the Chevy's battery, and place the black cable on the multimeter onto the ground ("-") of your battery. Set the multimeter to "20V DC," and measure the output of the battery. If the output is less than 12 volts, charge or replace the battery, and then attempt to start your Chevy.

  • Turn on your headlights. If you are in your garage, turn off the garage lights. If the vehicle is outside, wait until dark.

  • Turn the ignition key. If the headlights dim, your ignition module is working properly. If the headlights do not dim, the ignition module is defective.
