How to Remove the Starter On a 2001 Oldsmobile Aurora

A starter motor is a high-torque electric motor for turning the gear on an engine's flywheel. Starters are common on cars, trucks, boats and all-terrain vehicles. The starter motor has evolved from early manual starters (hand cranks on old cars). They are often located on the underside of a vehicle, close to the engine block and transmission housing.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrench
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Car hoist or jack stands
  • Disconnect the negative battery cable.

  • Remove the torque converter. The torque converter is used to help the transmission shift gears. It looks like a doughnut and slides off the transmission. Using a Phillips screwdriver, remove the lower front air deflector.

  • Pull off the starter electrical connectors. Using the appropriate wrench, remove the two bolts holding the starter in place. Remove the starter.
