How to Remove a Broken Tensioner Pulley in a Durango

The Dodge Durango uses an idler pulley and a tensioner pulley to help maintain the proper levels of tension on the serpentine belt. To differentiate between the two pulleys, the tensioner pulley bolts to a metal arm that bolts onto the engine block. The idler pulley positions to the left of the crankshaft pulley, and the tensioner pulley positions between the idler pulley and A/C compressor pulley. You need to change the idler pulley if the bearing in the center of the pulley wears out and the pulley flexes on the bolt that secures it to the tensioner arm.

Things You'll Need

  • 3/8-inch ratchet driver
  • Socket set
  • Place the 3/8-inch ratchet driver into the square hole on the tensioner arm, and rotate the arm and pulley upward until it reaches its positive stop.

  • Hold the tensioner arm against the positive stop while you remove the serpentine belt from the tensioner pulley. Do not remove the serpentine belt from any of the Durango's other pulleys.

  • Hold the tensioner arm against the positive stop while you place a socket and ratchet onto the bolt that goes through the center of the tensioner pulley. Loosen the bolt by turning it counterclockwise until the bolt is free from the pulley.
