Most people are confused as to where they should start fixing the leak the moment they detect the problem, but a few indicators can you get you on the road to repair.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrench
  • Rubber mallet
  • Razor blade
  • Ruler
  • Head gasket replacement
  • Torque wrench
  • Dry cloth
  • Pop the hood of your car and disconnect your car battery by removing its cable with a wrench. This will prevent electrocution while you repair the head gasket.

  • Check the bolts found on the cover of the head gasket. Remove these bolts by unscrewing them with your hands and take out the head cover, tapping a rubber mallet on the area where it touches the head gasket.

  • Scrape the head gasket using a razor blade, making sure that the old head gasket falls into the engine. Use a ruler to ensure that the cover of the gasket remains straight.

  • Position the new gasket right over the engine's exposed area and line up the cover of its head at the top of the gasket. Tighten the bolts with a torque wrench, following the note specified in the auto's manual. Use a zigzag pattern when tightening the bolts to make sure that they are equally tightened.

  • Check the oil of the gasket and change it if necessary. Wipe the area with a dry piece of cloth to get rid of spilled oil before reconnecting the battery of the car engine.
