Where Are the Freeze Plugs Located on a 1998 Dodge 1500?

The freeze plugs on the 1998 Dodge 1500 act as an outlet for coolant if the coolant inside the engine freezes. They prevent the engine block from cracking. Before the block cracks, the freeze plugs will pop out of the engine and allow the fluid to escape the engine. Because of this, the engine uses eight different plugs. All are round and approximately 3 inches in diameter.

Things You'll Need

  • Ramps
  • Flashlight
  • Drive the front of your Dodge 1500 onto a set of ramps, and secure the vehicle using the parking brake.

  • Craw under the engine, and position yourself under the driver's side of the engine. Locate the bottom of the engine block. You will see three metal circles indented into the engine. These are the left-side freeze plugs.

  • Slide over to the passenger side of the engine and locate the three engine freeze plugs in the same location on the engine. These are the right-side freeze plugs.

  • Slide toward the back of the engine where the bell housing mounts to the engine block. Use a flashlight to locate the last two freeze plugs on the back of the engine toward the bottom. They are both indented into the engine.
