How to Replace a Side Marker Light

Side marker lights are usually located in one of two places. On older vehicles, the side marker lights were installed in the lower side of the fender of bumper. On newer vehicles, the side marker light is installed in the headlamp lens. This makes for efficient use of space. Regardless of the type of vehicle you have, the process for changing the marker light is relatively straightforward.

Headlamp Mounted

  • Open the engine hood and locate the back of the headlamp lens. Usually the backside of the lens is black and has two sockets connected to it. One is for the headlamp and the other is for the marker light.

  • Locate the socket closest to the side of the fender. Turn the socket counterclockwise while you pull out the socket.

  • Pull the bulb out of the socket. Slide the new bulb into the socket.

  • Place the socket into the headlamp and secure it by turning it clockwise.

Bumper or Fender Mounted

  • Locate the backside of the lens by lying on the ground and looking upward into the bumper or fender. You will find one socket in the center of the lens.

  • Turn the socket counterclockwise a quarter turn and pull the socket out of the housing.

  • Pull the bulb out of the socket and slide the new bulb into the socket.

  • Place the socket back into the lens housing and turn it a quarter turn clockwise to secure it to the housing.
