How to Disable the Alarm in a 1998 Saturn

The 1998 Saturn comes equipped with a manufacturer-installed alarm system. The system can be adjusted to be fully or partially active, arming itself up to two minutes after locking the doors to the car. The system will work with or without the use of the Saturn key fob. The system can be disabled using the diagnostic tool at a dealership or service repair shop. With a little ingenuity, it can be done at home for free.

Things You'll Need

  • Paperclip
  • Locate the diagnostic connector on the left side of the column on the dashboard, below the steering wheel. It has two rows of pins. Close the car doors.

  • Bend the paperclip into a "U" shape. Count in from the left of the diagnostic connector on the top row to the fourth and eighth pin. Place one end of the paperclip on the fourth pin and the other side on the eighth pin. Hold in place.

  • Insert the key into the ignition. Turn the key to the accessory position (the first position) on and off 11 times while holding the paperclip in position.

  • Remove paperclip from connector and try the alarm. If the alarm still arms, repeat the process.
