How to Restore Headlights with Sandpaper

If your headlights are cloudy they may obstruct your ability to see at night or in dark weather. Restoring your headlight lenses yourself with sandpaper can bring back the shine to the headlight lenses as well as allow the full brightness of the headlight bulbs to shine through. Rather than buying new headlight lenses you can restore your current lenses in a process that shouldn't take more than thirty minutes for each headlight lens.

Things You'll Need

  • Soap and water
  • 1000 grit sandpaper
  • Water sprayer
  • 1200 grit sandpaper
  • 1400 grit sandpaper
  • Buffing kit with rotary implement
  • Restoration Polish
  • Soft Towel
  • Clean off the dirt on your headlight lens with soap and water.

  • Soak the 1000 grit sandpaper for a minute in water. Spray the headlight lens with water as you scrub the surface with the 1000 grit sandpaper. This action sands away the tiny scratches that accumulate on the surface of the lens over its lifetime.

  • Repeat Step 2 with the 1200 grit sandpaper. The finer sandpaper sands away any large scratches left by the 1000 grit sandpaper.

  • Repeat Step 3 with the 1400 grit sandpaper. This final sandpaper sands away any scratches left by the 1200 grit sandpaper.

  • Attach the buffing wheel from the buffing kit to the rotary implement. Place a small amount of buffing compound on the wheel. Buff the surface of the headlight lens.

  • Scoop a small amount of restoration polish onto the soft towel. Polish the entire surface of the headlight lens until it shines.

  • Repeat Steps 1 through 6 to restore the headlight lens on the other headlight assembly.
