How to Install Ignition Coils for a 2001 F150

The 2001 Ford F150 uses two types of coil systems, depending upon the model. One type of system has a single coil pack that each spark plug wire is connected to. The other type, called the coil-over plug system, features individual coils mounted over each spark plug. The method for installing an ignition coil depends upon the engine model. The installation procedure requires only basic tools and can easily be accomplished by a novice mechanic.

Things You'll Need

  • Silicone dielectric compound
  • Combination wrench
  • Socket wrench

Single Coil Model

  • Disconnect the negative battery cable with a combination wrench.

  • Locate the old ignition coil and disconnect it if necessary. Disconnect the electrical connector and the spark plug wires from the coil using your fingers to gently remove them. Remove the mounting bolts with a socket wrench and remove the old ignition coil from the work area.

  • Install the ignition coil on the mounting bracket. Secure the retaining bolts with a socket wrench. Connect the electrical connector to the ignition coil by pushing it on gently. Apply silicone dielectric compound to the inside of each spark plug wire.

  • Insert each spark plug wire into the corresponding terminal on the ignition coil. Connect the negative battery cable with a combination wrench. Start the vehicle to make sure the ignition coil is working properly.

Multiple Coil Models

  • Disconnect the negative battery cable with a combination wrench. Disconnect the ignition coil connector using your fingers to gently pull it off.

  • Remove the ignition coil mounting bolt with a socket wrench and remove the coil if necessary.

  • Install the new ignition coil and secure with the mounting bolt. Tighten the bolt with a socket wrench. Connect the ignition coil connector by pushing it on gently with your fingers.

  • Connect the negative battery cable with a combination wrench and start the vehicle to make sure the new coil works properly.
