How to Replace a 4Runner Antenna Mast

The antenna on the Toyota 4Runner comes in two configurations. The base model has a fixed, non-retractable mast antenna as standard equipment. As an upgrade, you can opt for a power antenna that retracts when the stereo is turned off. The retractable antenna is less susceptible to damage caused by vandals and other hazards, but being a mechanical device, it comes with it own set of potential problems. Fortunately, both of these antenna masts are easy to replace.

Things You'll Need

  • Wrench (fixed antenna)
  • Grease or anti-seize compound (fixed antenna)
  • Snap-ring pliers (power antenna)
  • Assistant (power antenna)

Fixed Antenna

  • Use a small wrench to turn the antenna mast counterclockwise. Remove the mast from the antenna base.

  • Coat the threads of the new antenna mast with grease or anti-seize compound.

  • Place the new mast on the antenna base and screw it into place with the wrench. Turn the antenna mast clockwise until it is tight.

Power Antenna

  • Turn the ignition to the "Off" position. Use a pair of snap-ring pliers to remove the antenna base retaining nut. The pliers have small perpendicular protrusions at the tips that you can insert into the middle of the nut. When you squeeze the pliers, the protrusions separate and press against the inside of the nut. This provides enough friction for you to turn the nut counterclockwise to remove it from the base.

  • Direct your assistant to turn the ignition to "ACC" and to switch the stereo on. As the antenna extends, guide it out of the base and the motor. Leave the key in the "ACC" position.

  • Guide the plastic part of the new antenna into the antenna base. Make sure that the gear teeth are facing towards the front of the vehicle. Insert the antenna as far as possible into the antenna motor. When properly seated, you should be able to see only about an inch of the plastic part.

  • Direct your assistant to turn off the ignition. This will cause the antenna to retract, winding the plastic part around the motor gears.

  • Replace the antenna base retaining nut. Use the snap-ring pliers to tighten the nut clockwise.
