How to Replace Wrangler Bump Stops

The bump stops on your Jeep Wrangler should be replaced often. They are located inside the coil spring, which needs to be removed to access them. Stock bump stops are made out of rubber, which will eventually deteriorate. The bump stop is designed to stop the suspension from bottoming out. If the bump stop is missing or is worn out, the tire can come in contact with the fender. Avoid costly repairs by maintaining your bump stops.

Things You'll Need

  • Lug nut wrench
  • Hydraulic jack
  • Coil compressors
  • Pliers
  • Loosen the lug nuts off one of the tires with a lug nut wrench.

  • Place the jack under the axle and lift the vehicle.

  • Remove the lug nuts and set them aside. Remove the tire from the axle.

  • Locate the bump stop inside the coil spring.

  • Place coil compressors on each side of the coil spring. Tighten the bolt with a ratchet and socket until the spring is compressed enough to remove it.

  • Pull the rubber bump stop out of the mount using pliers.

  • Place the new bump stop into the mount. Tap it with a hammer to seat the bump stop into the mount.

  • Reinstall the coil spring. Release the tension on the coil compressors by loosening the bolt with a ratchet and socket.

  • Reinstall the tire on the axle. Tighten the lug nuts and lower the vehicle to the ground.

  • Repeat these steps for the remaining bump stops.
