The Location of the 2000 Impala Engine Starter

The starter in a 2000 Chevrolet Impala consists of a starter motor, a solenoid and a gear within a housing (though some solenoids are separate). When you turn your key in the ignition to the "start" position, the solenoid energizes the starter motor and the starter's gear moves forward, meshing with the gears on the Impala's transmission flex plate. At the same time, the starter motor begins to crank the engine so it can start. The starter is located underneath the engine, in front of the oil pan to the left of the transmission bell housing.

Things You'll Need

  • Battery terminal wrench
  • Automotive jack
  • Jack stands
  • Wheel chocks
  • Place the Impala's transmission in "Park" and shut down the engine. Apply the parking brake and open the hood. Disconnect the negative battery cable using the battery terminal wrench.

  • Raise the front of the vehicle using the automotive jack and support it with jack stands. Chock the rear wheels.

  • Crawl underneath the vehicle and look at the bottom of the engine. The starter is in front of the oil pan. It is black in color, cylindrical, and a little wider and shorter than a 1/2-lb. coffee can. It has four wires connected to it.
