How to Use an Easy Out

There are very few things more frustrating for mechanics than breaking off a bolt while you are just about finished repairing your vehicle. There is no easy method of extracting a broken or otherwise stuck bolt. The Easy Out is a bolt extraction tool that can be used to bore down into the broken metal and back it out slowly. It takes patience and some practice to use one.

Things You'll Need

  • Drill
  • Drill bits
  • Penetrating oil
  • Easy Out kit
  • Hammer
  • Drill a small hole into the center of the broken bolt. It is very important that you do not drill off-center. The size of the drill is determined by the size of the bolt you are taking out. Most Easy Out kits come equipped with hardened drill bits. Read the instructions that come with your kit and use the drill it tells you to use. Drill down into the bolt a couple of millimeters, and then stop.

  • Spray some penetrating oil into the hole. This cools off the metal while you are drilling the rest of the hole.

  • Drill the hole a few more millimeters. Select the largest size Easy Out that will fit in the hole. Push the tool into the hole and tap the top of it with a hammer to help the threads grip.

  • Twist the Easy Out slowly to determine whether it is binding enough to turn the bolt. If it is not binding, drill down a little farther.

  • Tap the top of the Easy Out again with a hammer and twist it. Once the bolt begins to turn, twist the bolt out as if it had a head on it.
