How to Remove a Window Crank From a Chevrolet Pickup

The window cranks in Chevrolet pickups are made from either metal or high-impact plastic. The bottom end of these cranks contain a splined female chamber that sits on top of the splined male window crank gear. The crank is held to the gear with a small steel retaining clip. As time passes, the splined chamber on the window crank can become stripped, which means you'll need to replace it. Replacement window cranks are available from Chevrolet dealerships, automotive salvage yards and auto parts stores.

Things You'll Need

  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Turn the ignition to the "Off" position and shift the transmission into park. Engage the emergency brake.

  • Place a flat-head screwdriver between the window crank and the door panel. Gently pry the door panel away from the window crank enough to expose the retaining clip.

  • Remove the retaining clip using a needle-nose pliers and set it aside.

  • Lift the window crank off of the door.
