How to Change the Spark Plugs in a 2003 Mitsubishi Galant

Spark plugs, like other vehicle components, go bad after time and need to be replaced. Replace faulty spark plugs immediately to ensure optimal performance from your 2003 Galant. Spark plugs are easily accessible on most Mitsubishi vehicles can be changed with basic tools.

Things You'll Need

  • Crescent wrench
  • Spark plug wrench
  • Replacement spark plugs
  • Park the vehicle in a lit and accessible location and pop the hood. Use a crescent wrench to remove the negative (black) terminal from its battery post.

  • Locate the 4 spark plugs on the top of the motor housing. These will have either gray or dull blue wires protruding from them.

  • Remove the spark plug wires by pulling them off the plugs. The wires are connected with small internal clips that click either way. Be careful, as it is easy to damage the wires.

  • Use a spark plug wrench to remove the 4 plugs. Turn them counter-clockwise to remove. Be careful not to let any dirt or grime fall into the motor.

  • Install the new plugs into the plug housing (consult your owner's manual for the type of plug). Be very careful to thread the plugs perfectly. Cross-threading can quickly ruin a plug. Cinch down the plugs firmly, but not too tight.

  • Replace the 4 spark plug wires by pressing them onto the heads of the plugs until you hear them click into place.

  • Replace the negative terminal on your Galant's battery post.
