How to Repair an Auto Keyless Lock

An automobile's keyless entry system lets drivers enter a vehicle without the use of a key. A remote control acts as the keyless locking mechanism by locking and unlocking doors. New remotes, or those with new batteries, might need to be programmed. Remotes that have keys built into them will require a reset each time you receive a new key. It only takes a few steps to replace the batteries, reset the remote control and repair the system.

Things You'll Need

  • New battery

Replacing the Battery

  • Remove the keyless remote's battery cover. Using a coin, turn the cover counterclockwise.

  • Remove the old battery.

  • Insert a new batter of the same polarity. Make sure the positive (+) and negative (-) ends of the battery are properly placed.

  • Replace the battery cover and lock it in place by turning it clockwise with the coin.

Resetting the Keyless Remote

  • Step inside your car and close all the doors.

  • Place the key in the ignition. Turn it to the "On" position but do not start the car.

  • Lock all the car doors by pressing the driver's side lock button.

  • Press the lock button on the keyless remote. The parking lights should flash on.

  • Press the unlock button on the keyless remote. The car doors should unlock. Repeat the process from Step 3 if they do not unlock.

  • Lock the doors from the inside of the car and quickly press the lock button on the keyless remote twice. You should see the parking lights flash on.

  • Remove the key from the ignition and exit the car. Make sure all doors are shut.

  • Press the lock and unlock buttons a few times to ensure your remote works properly.
