How to Remove Frozen Brake Drums

Frozen brake drums can be a very aggravating part of a brake job, but they do happen sometimes. Brake drums don't actually freeze like water does; they freeze due to rusted metal shavings adhering to both the brake shoes and the drums. The actual mechanical task of removing them is fairly simple compared to the physical exertion it takes to loosen them up. You still need to know the process and a few key tips to get this job done correctly.

Things You'll Need

  • Ratchet
  • Socket set
  • Hammer
  • Pry bar
  • Rust penetrating spray (WD-40 or PB Blaster)
  • Jack up the vehicle and secure it on jack stands.

  • Remove the wheels with a ratchet and socket set to loosen the lug nuts.

  • Spray a good coat of rust penetrating chemical through the small crack between the drum and dust shield. Allow this chemical to sit for five to 10 minutes.

  • Pound around the drum a few times using a hammer. Spin the drum 1/4 of a turn after every hit.

  • Pry on the drum using a pry bar.

  • Repeat Steps 3 through 5 until the drum comes off.
