1995 Cadillac Deville Fuel Pump Replacement Instructions

The 1995 Cadillac Deville uses a fuel pump and fuel level sending unit combination packaged in a plastic module. This cylindrical module is located inside the fuel tank. The fuel pump supplies fuel under pressure to the fuel injectors. The fuel pressure regulator returns any over-pressure fuel back to the tank.

Things You'll Need

  • Floor jack
  • Jack stands
  • Ratchet
  • Set of sockets
  • Hammer
  • Common screwdriver
  • Pliers
  • Siphon hose
  • Raise the rear of the car with the floor jack and support it with jacks stands. Disconnect the electrical connector from the fuel pump located directly behind the fuel tank. Start the engine to relieve the fuel pressure. If it starts, it will only be for a second or two, which is fine. The pressure in the line has been reduced.

  • Drain the fuel tank if it is over half-full using a siphon hose that empties into a fuel container. Loosen the top and bottom hose clamps on the fuel filler hose and remove the hose. Loosen the fuel vent hose clamp at the fuel tank and remove the hose. The vent hose parallels the fuel filler hose.

  • Place the floor jack under the fuel tank, making sure the jack is in the middle of the two fuel tank straps so it does not interfere with their removal. Raise the jack to touch the fuel tank. Remove the two tank strap bolts behind the tank, using a 15-mm socket. Move the straps out of the way so the tank can be lowered.

  • Lower the fuel tank just enough to reach the fuel lines on top of the tank. Remove the fuel supply line, the return line and the vent-to-canister line, using a screwdriver to loosen the clamps. Pull the fuel tank from under the car.

  • Remove the lock ring, holding the fuel pump in the tank. The lock ring has horizontal tabs that interlock with corresponding tabs on the tank. The lock ring has several vertical tabs that are designed to disengage the lock ring. Use the hammer and screwdriver to tap the lock ring tabs counterclockwise to disengage the horizontal tabs. Lift the fuel pump and sending unit module from the fuel tank carefully so the fuel sending unit arm is not bent or damaged.

  • Install the new fuel filter on the new pump by orienting it in the same direction as the old filter and pushing it on the bottom of the pump with some force. Install the fuel pump module into the fuel tank, making sure that the hose nozzles are facing in the correct direction. Tap the lock ring clockwise to engage the tabs.

  • Raise the fuel tank back into position, allowing enough room to engage the hoses before setting it into final position. Install the straps and bolts. Tighten the bolts securely.

  • Remove the floor jack. Connect the electrical harness connector for the fuel pump and fuel level sender. Install the filler and vent hose and tighten the clamps. Lower the car and cycle the ignition switch two or three times. Check for leaks.
