Although the engine mounts aren't normally replaced in a vehicle, if they do start to wear out, the engine vibration won't be properly dampened, causing noise and possibly damage. Unlike on some vehicles, the 1998 Chevrolet Malibu engine does not have a suitable lift point to relieve the strain from the mounts, so you will need a special tool to raise the engine from above. Replacement mounts and an engine mount tool can be ordered through a Chevrolet dealership. Some auto-part stores may be able to order them for you.
Mount engine support tool J-28467-A and lift the engine enough to remove the strain from the motor mounts. Instructions for properly mounting and using the tool are included with the tool.
Loosen the right-front lug nuts. Raise the front end of the vehicle with a floor jack placed under the front frame cross member. Lower the car onto a pair of jack stands. The support points are immediately behind the front wheels. Remove the right-front wheel.
Unbolt and remove the splash shield from the wheel well. Remove the bolts that hold the lower end of the engine mounts. Under the hood, remove the bolts attaching the mounts to the body. Remove the nut that attaches the mount to the bracket on the engine.
Install the replacement mounts. Torque the bracket nut to 46 ft-lbs. and the other bolts to 49 ft-lbs. Lower the engine and remove the engine support tool. Install the splash guard and wheel. Hand-tighten the lug nuts, lower the car and tighten the lug nuts.
