How to Replace the Fuel Pump in a 1995 Chevy Caprice

A faulty fuel pump will cause your Chevy Caprice to run rough and stall, or may prevent the vehicle from running at all. There are no access panels to reach the pump, so the fuel tank has to be removed prior to removing the pump. Expect to spend about 45 minutes performing the swap. A replacement pump can be purchased from most auto parts stores.

Things You'll Need

  • Jack
  • 4 jack stands
  • Approved gasoline drain pan
  • Socket wrench
  • Socket set, metric
  • Raise the vehicle with the jack and support it securely on jack stands. The front lift point is the center of the frame crossmember, below the engine. The rear of the vehicle can be supported by the differential housing. Place the jack stands under the frame rails, where they curve outwards from the rest of the frame.

  • Open the fuel filler cap and drain the gasoline into a drain pan. The drain plug is located towards the front of the fuel tank.

  • Disconnect the hoses and electrical connectors from the fuel-sending unit (it is a circular cap visible on top of the tank). Support the fuel tank with a transmission jack, or enlist a friend's help. Unbolt the straps that hold the tank in place and lower it.

  • Turn the lock ring around the assembly counter-clockwise, and pull the fuel sending unit out of the tank. The fuel pump is the lowest component in the assembly. Pull it up and outwards to separate it from the support rail.

  • Slide the replacement pump into the fuel-sender assembly. Set the assembly in place and tighten the lock ring. Raise the fuel tank and bolt the straps back in place. Reconnect the hoses and electrical connector. Lower the car.
