How to Replace a 1997 Buick Park Avenue Fuel Filter

The fueling system on a 1997 Buick Park Avenue is a fuel injector-based system. A fuel injector pumps fuel into the engine to keep it running. A fuel filter is needed to clean the fuel before it flows into the fuel injector. A dirty fuel filter can cause your fuel injector to clog, which could cause serious damage to your engine. Changing your fuel filter every 25,000 miles will help keep your fueling system performing smoothly.

Things You'll Need

  • Fuel filter Adjustable wrench or a pair of pliers Gloves Protective eye wear
  • Park your Buick Park Avenue in a safe area. Open the hood and locate the power distribution center. It should be near the battery. Disconnect the fuel pump relay. Get into your car and start the ignition. If your car does start, allow it to idle until it runs out of gas. Once your car has shut off from lack of gas, disconnect the negative cable from the battery.

  • Go to the hood area of your vehicle. Locate the fuel filter housing area. The fuel filter is located under the hood on the passenger’s side of the car. It is mounted to the frame rail near the lower engine area.

  • Remove the retainer clips that are secured over the connection between the fuel filter and the fuel line. Use an adjustable wrench or a pair of pliers to disconnect the fuel filter from the fuel line. After you have disconnected the fuel line from the fuel filter, you will notice the fuel filter is still attached to the frame rail. Use an adjustable wrench to remove the hex nuts that connect the fuel filter to the frame rail. Remove the old fuel filter.

  • Replace the old fuel filter with a new fuel filter. Put the new fuel filter in place and secure the fuel filter to the frame rail using an adjustable wrench and a set of hex nuts. Attach the fuel line to the fuel filter by pushing the fuel line onto the fuel filter. Place the retainer clips over the area where the fuel filter and the fuel line come together.

  • Connect the negative batter cable to the battery. Connect the fuel pump relay to the power distribution center.
