How to Change the Transmission Fluid on a 2008 Dodge Ram Pickup

The transmission fluid in your Dodge Ram should be replaced at least every 60,000 miles. If you use your truck to pull heavy loads, change the transmission fluid more frequently. The transmission fluid drain pan is located underneath the vehicle. There is not a drain plug for the fluid. Replacing the fluid in the transmission involves removing the pan. It is wise to replace the gasket after removing the transmission pan.

Things You'll Need

  • Ratchet
  • Socket set
  • Bucket
  • Rag
  • Torque wrench
  • Park your Dodge Ram on a level surface and apply the parking brake. Allow the vehicle to cool.

  • Locate the transmission pan under the vehicle. There are bolts securing the pan to the transmission. Remove these bolts using a ratchet and socket. The fluid will drain from the pan. Place a bucket under the pan to catch the transmission fluid.

  • Remove the old gasket from the pan. You may need to use steel wool to clean the surface. Make sure the two mounting surfaces are clean.

  • Locate the small magnet inside the pan. There will be small particles attached to the magnet. Clean the magnet using a rag.

  • Install the new gasket onto the transmission oil pan. Install the transmission pan back onto the transmission.

  • Install and tighten the bolts in a cross-wise pattern to 13 ft-lbs. using a torque wrench.

  • Add four qt. of transmission fluid into the fill hole located under the hood.

  • Start the vehicle and shift through the gears. Allow the engine to run for 15 minutes before checking the transmission fluid level. Check the transmission fluid level with the vehicle running and the transmission in park. Add fluid as needed.
