How to Take the Door Panel Off a Pontiac

Pontiac door panels serve a threefold purpose. They offer sound insulation for the passenger compartment of the vehicle. Door panels embellish the interior trim package. They also hide the door access holes necessary to repair and or replace interior door components such as window regulators, window motors, door locks and door latches. With all that in mind, there are a number of reasons why you might need to take the door panel off a Pontiac. Anyone with basic mechanical aptitude can remove a Pontiac door panel in under 30 minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • Trim tool
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Pry the window switch bezel out of the door panel with the trim tool. Disconnect the wiring harness from the switch by hand. Remove the screw behind the bezel with the Phillips screwdriver.

  • Remove any screws behind the door pull or behind the interior door handle with the Phillips screwdriver. The amount and location depend on your year and model Pontiac.

  • Remove the screws located at the bottom and side of the door panel with the Phillips screwdriver. The number and location of the screws depend on your year and model Pontiac.

  • Pry the lower trailing edge of the door panel away from the door with the trim tool. Look between the panel and door skin to locate any trim pins. Not all Pontiacs have trim pins holding the door panel to the door, however, if yours does, pry them loose with the trim tool.

  • Lift the door panel up and off the door by hand.
