If your Jeep Cherokee is shifting irregularly and you have assumed it is a worn-out transmission, try replacing the neutral safety switch. These switches are delicate, and oils, dust and water can damage them. Symptoms of a bad neutral safety switch are numerous. The shifting problems are usually intermittent and hard to pinpoint with diagnostic equipment. Replace the neutral safety switch in your Jeep Cherokee yourself and save money.
Park your Jeep Cherokee on a flat surface.
Open the hood. Locate the neutral safety-switch harness. This is located on the passenger side next to the transmission dipstick.
Unplug the neutral safety switch by depressing the black release clip on the coupler.
Locate the neutral safety switch. The safety switch is on the passenger side of the transmission. It protrudes out of the transmission from an oval indentation in the transmission case.
Pry the locking tabs from the neutral safety switch using a flat screwdriver. Remove the neutral safety switch from the transmission by removing the bolt holding it into position.
Remove the neutral safety switch by rotating the switch counterclockwise. You may spray the switch with a lubricant to allow for easier removal.
Install the new neutral safety switch into the transmission. Tighten the switch and bolt it down using a ratchet and socket.
Reconnect the neutral safety-switch harness on top of the engine. Confirm that the switch is tight. Close the hood.
