How to Replace the Fuel Filter on a 1995 Suzuki Sidekick

The 1995 Suzuki Sidekick has both fuel injected, as well as carbureted engines. The fuel filters are not interchangeable so notify the parts dealer of this fact when ordering a filter. The carbureted filter uses clamp tabs on the fuel lines where the fuel injected engines use banjo bolts. The carbureted fuel filter is on the passenger side of the vehicle just forward of the fuel tank and located in a vertical position. The fuel injected fuel filter is closer to the fuel tank and situated in a horizontal position.

Things You'll Need

  • Floor jack
  • Jack stands
  • Drain pan
  • Clean rags
  • ¼-inch drive ratchet
  • Set of ¼-inch drive sockets
  • Set of wrenches

Carbureted Engines

  • Raise and support the vehicle on jack stands and allow the engine to cool completely. Remove the fuel lines from the fuel filter by using the pliers to compress the fuel line tabs and sliding the pliers away from the filter to remove the fuel lines. Allow the excess fuel to drain into the drain pan.

  • Loosen the clamp securing the fuel filter and remove the filter. Slide the new fuel filter into the clamp, while keeping the inlet and outlet properly oriented.

  • Compress the fuel line tabs and push the fuel lines on the fuel filter. Tighten the fuel filter clamp.

Fuel Injected Engines

  • Raise and support the vehicle on jack stands and allow the engine to cool completely. Place the drain pan under the filter. Loosen the drain plug screw on the filter to bleed off the excess fuel pressure.

  • Remove the two fuel lines, using two wrenches. One wrench is used to hold the fuel filter while the other wrench is used to remove the banjo bolt.

  • Loosen the fuel filter clamp and slide the fuel filter out of the clamp.

  • Slide the new fuel filter with the proper inlet and outlet orientation into the clamp and tighten the clamp. Install the banjo bolts with new metal O-rings and tighten them down in the same manner that they were removed.
